My project
As I've previously said, I work as a volunteer at the Molí de Baix, the center of the services for family, childhood and non-formal education of Sant Lluís. The center offers several services (English non-formal classes for children, info point and support for families, prevention, European Solidarity Corps partnership...). Here in Menorca almost every municipality offers a space where kids can hang out, play at the computer, playstation, wii, table football, table tennis, board games, and participate at workshops. At the Molí, the leisure service (casal) is on Friday and Saturday, from 16.00 till 23.00, for kids from 8 to 17 years old, more or less. My role is to assist and help the two educators (monitores) in charge. We set up the space, welcome the children, propose handcrafts and manual activities, we monitor the use of computers and devices and be there for them.
I like handcrafts and diy activities and I have a lot of fun helping the children with that. This month, since Christmas is coming closer, we proposed every time a handwork from the Christmas tradition of a different country. We have realized Mexican piñata, German advent calendar, Russian spiderweb and more. For the teenagers group sometimes we organize excursions and overnight camps as well. And in summertime all the activites will be outside, with hicking, sports activities and camps. Can't wait for it.
So the most exciting part of my volunteer job takes place in the weekend (Friday and Saturday), but I have duties during the week too. The amount of hours to devote to the volunteer project varies from project to project and is specified in the Activity Agreement but is always between 30 and 38 hours per week. Mine is of 35 hours distribuite in 5 days a week. Sunday and Monday are my free days (because I work on Saturday). From Tuesday to Thursday I participate to the planification of the activities of the weekend with my Supervisior (we schedule the casal timetable, we search for ideas, share proposals, list the material needed and prepar props); I create short promotional video about Molí activities; I lay out, print and spread the posters with the casal activities of the week; I write this blog; and I attend at Spanish class that's included in my volunteer hours (2 lessons of 1 hour and a half per week).
I'm really enjoying my volunteer project, it's even better that what I was expecting. :)
